Here’s Your Personal Guide to Enjoying the Best of the Mother City

Hello again from Carl and Emsie here at Somerset View Guest House!

We get asked a lot by our guests, “Is Cape Town safe?” And honestly, we get it. When you're heading somewhere new, you want to feel relaxed and confident as you explore, and safety is a big part of that. So, we thought we'd share some insights and tips from us to you, so you can enjoy everything Cape Town has to offer while feeling safe and at ease.

So, Is Cape Town Safe for Tourists?

Cape Town is such a vibrant, beautiful city—full of rich culture, history and stunning scenery. Like any major city, there are areas that are more tourist-friendly, and others you might not want to approach. But rest assured, Cape Town is welcoming to visitors from all over, and there’s so much to explore and enjoy.

At Somerset View, we want you to feel comfortable and safe every step of the way. That’s why we offer our shuttle service to take you to the best spots in the city. No need to worry about navigating unfamiliar streets or figuring out transport. We know the ins and outs of Cape Town and will ensure you have a smooth, stress-free experience.

A Few Safety Tips for Exploring Cape Town

Here are a few things we always recommend to our guests, so you can enjoy Cape Town to the fullest:

  1. Stick to Popular, Well-Visited Areas
Some areas are more tourist-friendly and generally feel safer, so we recommend sticking to places like these during the day. There are so many spots that are full of attractions, restaurants and shops, making it easy to enjoy your time and feel right at home!
  2. Use Reliable, Trusted Transport
Whether you're heading to the beach or the winelands, it's always smart to use reliable transport. For your convenience, we offer our shuttle service, but if you're exploring on your own, we recommend using an Uber to get around safely.
  3. Be Cautious at Night
Like most cities, it’s best to avoid walking alone at night, especially in quieter areas. Stick to busy tourist spots like the V&A Waterfront, and if you’re ever unsure, just give our shuttle service a call. We’re always here to help you get where you need to go.
  4. Keep Your Valuables Secure
While Cape Town is generally safe, we always recommend keeping your valuables safe, especially in crowded areas like markets or tourist attractions. Be mindful of your belongings—things like your phone and camera—and use a secure bag or wallet to keep everything close.
  5. Enjoy Nature Safely
Cape Town's natural beauty is one of its biggest draws, from the iconic Table Mountain to its scenic beaches. While these areas are generally safe to explore, it’s important to take precautions. Always hike with a group, stick to well-trodden paths, and be aware of your surroundings. Check local advice for the best times to visit and any safety tips before heading out on any hiking trail.

In a Nutshell…

Cape Town is an amazing city with so much to offer. With a little awareness and preparation, you can experience all its wonders without a hitch. And when you choose Somerset View as your base, you’ll have access to trusted transportation and local tips that will help you stay safe and make the most of your time here.

We can’t wait to welcome you soon!
