Hi again from Carl and Emsie at Somerset View Guest House! One of the things we love most about running Somerset View is getting to know our guests and hearing about their adventures. Recently, one of our guests returned from a visit to SANCCOB in Blouberg and was absolutely buzzing with excitement. They shared some photos and stories, and we couldn’t wait to pass them along!
It got us thinking about how many wonderful experiences Cape Town has to offer—many of which are just a short drive from us here in Somerset West.
Up Close with the Penguins
Hearing our guest talk about their visit reminded us of the first time we saw African penguins up close—those curious little faces, the way they waddle and of course, their surprising (and very loud) bray! 🐧
At SANCCOB, our guest got to watch the dedicated team in action—caring for and even watching the penguins practice their swimming. They said it was a truly heartwarming sight, seeing how much love and effort goes into rescuing these beautiful birds.
More Than Just a Visit—A Feel-Good Experience
Beyond the adorable factor (because let’s be honest, who doesn’t love penguins?), the visit left a real impact on our guest. Learning about SANCCOB’s incredible conservation work and how they help protect South Africa’s seabirds gave them a new appreciation for these beautiful creatures.
One of our loyal guests, Pricilla Simpson, has personally been involved with SANCCOB since 1982, supporting their efforts. Seeing guests take an interest in this meaningful cause is always special to us, and it’s a reminder of how every small act—whether visiting, donating, or simply spreading the word—helps keep South Africa’s seabird population thriving.
